Presented on the floating glass shelf are bronze cochlear (or inner ear) – the part of the body responsible for balance. Both cochlear are from the right ear, suggesting the sense of balance off-kilter toward the right or clockwise. The cochlears have been reproduced through a digital file given by an MRI scan from an anonymous body. They were then 3D printed in wax and cast in bronze.

Hannah Wilkes Intra Venus

I didn’t know where to start my university research, so I thought I would use my favourite work to date as a start. Photography isn’t my favourite media, and Hannah Wilkes is not my favourite artist but I think this is the most powerful work I have seen to date. I think it challenges how we value appearance and what it truly represents.
